Frequently Asked Questions: How are premiums calculated in the expat health insurance comparison tool?

The answers to your questions

If I include my wife when running the comparison, the amount shown for the same plan is much higher than for two separate requests (€277 per month for me and my wife for plan 1F3EXCPRH, and €99 + €55 for each of us separately). Are you sure the offers listed on your website are serious?

We checked your numbers, and they seem to be correct.

Each expat health insurance provider defines its own prices based mainly on the following criteria:
- the destination;
- the age of the applicant(s);
- the marital status of the applicant(s).

These are the criteria we use for our calculations. For the rates, we apply the guidelines provided to us by the insurers.

Each insurer also defines its own rules regarding subscriptions, which (among other things) are based on the following:
- the professional status of each insured person;
- the nationality of each insured person;
- the possibility of creating separate plans for members of the same family.

This last point is important because there can be a big difference between the premiums of a couple or family and those of a single individual.

In your case, €227 is a family premium calculated according to the rules of the insurer for the highest age group (i.e., 60 and over), and remains the same if children are added. The individual premiums are less expensive because one is calculated for you (aged 60), while the other is calculated for your wife (aged 41). You'll have to check whether combining the separate plans is possible under the subscription rules for this insurer.

Subscription rules vary greatly from one insurer to another, and unfortunately we would not be able to take these differences into account without adding a dozen or so additional questions (for example, the more favorable combination of separate plans would not be accepted by this insurer if the spouse is not expatriated).

We therefore display the rates as they are defined by the providers, and encourage you (on the website and in our emails) to contact us to go over the best possible ways of optimizing the plans of each insurer (separate plans, deductibles, mix of plans, etc.).

Choosing the right expat health insurance plan is not always easy. Our comparison tool provides for an initial overview of suitable plans, but must be complemented by a personal consultation with one of our expert advisors to fine-tune your choice according to various criteria, including the duration of your expatriation, your professional situation, your healthcare habits, and the country where you receive your care. We therefore recommend contacting us as soon as you can.

We also encourage you to consult our page on how expatriate health insurance plans are displayed.
